As we journey through Scripture, we often seek to understand its profound truths for our lives and our church. Today, I want to introduce you to a vital approach to Bible study called Biblical Theology. It’s not just for scholars; it’s a powerful tool for every believer.
We Focus on Biblical Theology
It studies how God revealed His Word historically and organically
God didn’t give us the whole Bible at once. His revelation unfolded progressively over time, culminating in Jesus Christ. Biblical theology pays close attention to this development.
It views the Bible as a coherent whole
because it has one divine Author who never contradicts Himself. It helps us uncover and articulate this unity
It focuses on salvation history
which is the true history of God’s saving acts, from creation to the fall, redemption, and consummation in Jesus Christ. This storyline forms the backbone of the entire Bible
It works inductively from the text
allowing the Bible to set its own agenda and categories, rather than imposing our own ideas. This means we strive to understand “what the text actually say” and “what the author meant by what he said”.
It connects the Old and New Testaments
often observing how later Scripture writers refer to earlier ones, tracing themes like prophecy and fulfillment, or the development of concepts like the temple throughout the entire Bible
Biblical Theology encourages us to respond humbly to God’s authoritative revelation, ultimately given in Christ through the Spirit. May we all grow in our understanding of biblical theology, allowing it to deepen our appreciation for God’s Word and strengthen our walk with Him!
