Biblical Theology for the Church

As we journey through Scripture, we often seek to understand its profound truths for our lives and our church. Today, I want to introduce you to a vital approach to Bible study called Biblical Theology. It’s not just for scholars; it’s a powerful tool for every believer.

We Focus on Biblical Theology

What Exactly is Biblical Theology?

At its heart, biblical theology is about understanding the overall theological message of the entire Bible. It’s essentially “the theology of the Bible” itself, discerning the theological contributions and original thought of the biblical writers. Thus, Biblical theology is “not our own theology, or that of our church or denomination. It is best seen as the theology of the biblical writers themselves” (Köstenberger, Biblical Theology). Thus, “when engaging in biblical theology, we are essentially seeking to discern the theological contributions of the biblical writers themselves.”

It studies how God revealed His Word historically and organically

God didn’t give us the whole Bible at once. His revelation unfolded progressively over time, culminating in Jesus Christ. Biblical theology pays close attention to this development.

It views the Bible as a coherent whole

because it has one divine Author who never contradicts Himself. It helps us uncover and articulate this unity

It focuses on salvation history

which is the true history of God’s saving acts, from creation to the fall, redemption, and consummation in Jesus Christ. This storyline forms the backbone of the entire Bible

It works inductively from the text

allowing the Bible to set its own agenda and categories, rather than imposing our own ideas. This means we strive to understand “what the text actually say” and “what the author meant by what he said”.

It connects the Old and New Testaments

often observing how later Scripture writers refer to earlier ones, tracing themes like prophecy and fulfillment, or the development of concepts like the temple throughout the entire Bible

In essence,

Biblical theology helps us see how all the pieces of God’s Word fit together into one grand, unfolding story of His purposes

We Focus on the Church

We believe Biblical Theology is for the local church. Biblical theology is not merely an academic exercise. It has profound practical benefits for us as believers and for the life of the church. Biblical theology transforms us by helping us see the incredible richness of God’s mind as revealed in His diverse and unified Word.

It makes the Gospel coherent
It shapes our faith and practice
It keeps us grounded in the text
It helps us apply truth thoughtfully
It reminds us that the Bible is for us
It reveals God’s nature and actions

Biblical Theology encourages us to respond humbly to God’s authoritative revelation, ultimately given in Christ through the Spirit. May we all grow in our understanding of biblical theology, allowing it to deepen our appreciation for God’s Word and strengthen our walk with Him!
